New Zealand

New Zealand (or Aotearoa – land of the long white cloud), truly is one of the most picturesque and photogenic places on earth. A small island nation of just over 4.5 million people, New Zealand is made up of two major land masses (North Island and South Island) and a number of smaller islands including Stewart Island located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The two main islands are divided by a 22km stretch of water called the Cook Strait.

The country is made up of some of the worlds most spectacular landscapes, from vast mountain ranges, steaming volcanoes to sweeping coastlines. It is a natural playground for thrill seekers and adventurers and those who simply want to visit for the culture and landscapes.

New Zealanders, also known as Kiwis, are a friendly, outgoing and welcoming people. Out of the 4.4 million people living in New Zealand today, the Maori, New Zealand’s native people, make up around 14.6% of the population. The other 85.4% is a mixture of Europeans, Asians and Pacific Islanders. This unusual blend of cultures is one reasons New Zealand is so unique. There are two official languages in New Zealand, Maori and English; however English is the main everyday language.

Time Zone

New Zealand Standard Time zone is 12 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+12) and the time zone is the same throughout the country.

In Summer, New Zealand time uses 'Daylight Saving', with clocks put forward one hour to GMT+13.Daylight Saving begins on the last Sunday in September and ends on the first Sunday of the following April, when clocks are put back to GMT+12.

Tipping

Tipping is not expected in New Zealand. People sometimes tip the waiter or waitress in an expensive restaurant but tips are not given in cafeterias or fast food restaurants.

Local Currency

The local currency in New Zealand is the New Zealand Dollar.

Flying to New Zealand

Travelling to New Zealand is easy. Flights are available from many international destinations.

Depending where you’re coming from, there are a number of airports that you can fly into, so you’re close to where you want to be. Auckland is the most common airport for flights to arrive and the closest International Airport to the festival. Domestic flights connect Auckland to airports throughout New Zealand.

Weather

New Zealand is home to a temperate climate with high sunshine hours and moderate rainfall. Much of the country lies near the coast, which means mild temperatures. The average temperature decreases as you travel south; January and February are the warmest months with July being the coldest month of the year. Find out more about New Zealand climate and weather here

It will be autumn in New Zealand during the festival. Temperatures during this time in the Waikato region usually average at approximately 9°C overnight to a high of 20°C during the day.

Getting around New Zealand

Driving in New Zealand

Exploring New Zealand’s beautiful landscapes by car, campervan or motorhome is a popular way to get around. Even if you’re used to driving in other places, you need to be well aware of things like weather extremes, narrow, windy roads and different road rules before you begin on your journey.

In New Zealand, we drive on the left hand side of the road and our vehicles seat the driver on the right. Always drive on the left hand side of the road in New Zealand. If you're used to driving on the right hand side of the road, this can be a challenge to remember especially when pulling out into traffic.

What’s different about driving in New Zealand?

New Zealand’s diverse terrain means roads are often narrow, hilly and windy with plenty of sharp corners. Outside of the main cities, there are very few motorways. Most of our roads are single lane in each direction without barriers in between. You may also encounter gravel roads. It’s important to allow plenty of time, go slow and pull over in a safe place if traffic wants to pass from behind you. Take plenty of breaks so that you stay alert.

Maps don’t show how narrow and windy roads can be. What might look like a short trip can take a long time. For example: Hokitika to the town of Haast, a popular drive for visitors stopping to see New Zealand’s glaciers, is 278km (172mi) on the map and may look like a short 3-hour drive. However, drivers should allow for up to 4 hours’ of driving time because of the windy road. This is common all over New Zealand –always allow for more time than you think you’ll need.

Do I need a special drivers license to drive in New Zealand?

You can legally drive in New Zealand for 12 months if you have either a current full driver’s licence from your home country in the English language or an International Driving Permit. You must carry your licence or permit at all times when driving and you are only able to drive the same types of vehicles you are licensed to drive in your home country.

You can find out more about driving in New Zealand here. And to find out whether your driving licence is valid in New Zealand click here

If you are interested in renting vehicles while you are in New Zealand, the team at Orbit Groups & Events have special negotiated rates and will be able to help you get them arranged.

Public Buses and Coaches

New Zealand has daily scheduled passenger bus services available throughout the country. There are also backpacker coach networks and many other coach companies serving the major tourist routes.

MOTEL

You'll find that motel accommodation in New Zealand, compared to many other countries, is generally of a high standard.

One of the most useful features of motel accommodation is the self-contained facilities. Some studio units will have cooking utensils, a hot plate and or microwave, toaster, kettle, crockery and cutlery. Other room types may have more comprehensive facilities such as a full kitchen. This is great if you prefer to prepare your own meals.

Motels also have a good choice of room types such as 2 bedroom or family units, making them a very economical choice for a family or larger group.

SELF-CATER APARTMENT

A Self-Cater Apartment will generally have  comprehensive cooking facilities such as a full kitchen. This is great if you prefer to prepare your own meals.

3 STAR HOTEL

The star rating for hotels generally applies to the facilities and services a hotel may have at your disposal and not necessarily the quality or value of those services.

Three-star hotels offer quality, style, comfortable accommodations, yet they’re still considered “affordable”. Though they’re not lavish, they offer a simpler option that won’t break the bank.

4 STAR HOTEL

Many of the hotels in this category have a range of room styles such as standard/deluxe/superior, lake view, mountain view, suites, etc. Many also have 2 and 3 bedroom suites, which can offer great value for a larger family or groups travelling together. Most 4 star hotels offer swimming pools, gyms, and a choice of restaurants.

For some inspiration on where to visit, below is some information on the most popular destinations around New Zealand.

Bay of Islands & Northland

Stretching to the northern tip of New Zealand, a slim finger of land between the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, this is a region where leisure activity and relaxation go hand in hand with a magnificent landscape.

From the white sandy beaches and myriad islands of the Bay of Islands on the east coast, to the glorious sand dunes, pounding surf and mystical Kauri forests on the west, the landscape is a powerful presence.

The historic lighthouse standing at the tip of Cape Reinga is one of New Zealand’s most recognisable sights

Auckland

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and has an urban population of approximately 1.5 million people. There are five international airports in New Zealand taking arrivals from all over the world. Auckland International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand. Direct flights come from Asia, the USA, the Pacific Islands and Australia, making Auckland Airport the most likely arrival airport into New Zealand. There’s always something happening in Auckland, from major sporting events, concerts and festivals to outdoor adventures, designer shopping and world-class food and wine..

Waikato

The Waikato region in New Zealand's North Island stretches from Coromandel Peninsula in the north, to the north-eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu in the south. A geographically and culturally diverse region, the Waikato has a range of activities and attractions to suit all ages and tastes – from the vibrant city hub of Hamilton to the rugged west coast, underground wonders and middle-earth movie magic.

Rotorua

Since the early 19th century, tourists have flocked to Rotorua’s natural hot springs, rich Maori culture, bubbling mud pools and active geysers – all of them spectacular thermal wonders on the "Pacific ring of fire".

This mystical volcanic landscape provides a dynamic backdrop to many adventures – mountain biking, trout fishing, bathing in natural hot pools, white water rafting and many other of the adventures New Zealand is famous for.

Hawkes Bay

Having a warm, dry climate has helped Hawke’s Bay earn its reputation as "the food bowl of New Zealand" and become the country's second-largest wine-producing region. It’s the first stop on the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail and a popular destination for cycling around the vines.

The seaside city of Napier is an art deco marvel, rebuilt in the 1930s after it was devastated by a huge earthquake. Today, the city boasts one of the best concentrations of original art deco, stripped classical and Spanish mission architecture.

Tongariro National Park

Tongariro National Park is an otherworldly landscape of towering volcanoes dominating a tussock-covered plateau, so scenic it had a starring role in The Lord of The Rings. Its companion, Whanganui National Park, is a mystical wilderness of deep forest surrounding New Zealand’s third-longest river.

The region’s striking and incredibly diverse landscapes can be explored on unforgettable outdoor adventures such as the world-famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, the Whanganui Journey and two Great Ride cycle trails.

Wellington

New Zealand's capital city, Wellington promotes itself as the national centre of arts, coffee, craft beer, film and politics, and there's an undeniable energy pulsing through the town.

Central Wellington is spread across the foreshores of a wide harbour and steep surrounding hills. Visitors don't have to venture far for nature and wildlife experiences, including Zealandia, an amazing suburban sanctuary, and Kapiti Island, an offshore reserve for endangered bird and marine species.

Nelson & Tasman

Nelson Tasman's golden sand beaches and vast protected areas of national park set the scene for year-round nature, wildlife and outdoor experiences, including sea kayaking, mountain biking, sailing, horse trekking and swimming with marine life.

The sea surrounding Nelson is the source of some of New Zealand’s finest seafood, and the temperate climate produces abundant grapes for wine, hops for beer and fruit, including apples for cider.

Christchurch

Christchurch, the South Island's largest urban centre, is characterised by its English heritage and the creativity and innovation of urban regeneration following the Canterbury earthquakes.

The picturesque city also serves as a gateway to fun-filled southern adventures, with an international airport and short drive to the sparkling Pacific Ocean, majestic Southern Alps and the ancient volcanic Banks Peninsula dotted with charming townships and hidden bays.

Dunedin

One of New Zealand’s oldest and most important settler cities, Dunedin’s Scottish heritage shows in its fine Edwardian and Victorian architecture, restaurants and bars serving haggis and a wee tipple, and the skirl of bagpipes heard at many events.

Dunedin is  placed in the Otago Harbour, sheltered in the arms of a long-dormant volcanic cone. The numerous surrounding beaches and inlets are spectacular and, just beyond the city limits, Otago Peninsula is a haven for wildlife populations and world-leading sustainability projects.

Queenstown

Queenstown is a resort town in Otago in the south-west of New Zealand's South Island boasting 220 adventure activities. There's always a good time to visit Queenstown, with plenty of fun to be had throughout the year. From award-winning restaurants, festivals, sporting events, skiing, mountain biking and all the adrenaline activities one could ever hope for. The picturesque views and abundance of activities makes Queenstown a must on any bucketlist trip to New Zealand.

West Coast

Stretching 600 kilometres , the West Coast is New Zealand’s largest and most protected region. It includes the spectacular Haast World Heritage Area, five of New Zealand’s 14 national parks and five marine reserves.

Conservation and sustainability are important to the West Coast, where 90 per cent of the land is administered by the Department of Conservation (DOC). Native wildlife and vegetation flourish along the coastline, in rainforests and on the icy slopes of the Southern Alps.

Our Team

Estelle

Where were you born?

I was born in Auckland.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I am very active so love hiking and going to the gym. I also enjoy cooking, travelling, spending time with my friends and family, and trying new food and wine.

Where is your “must visit” New Zealand destination?

Northland and the Bay of Islands as some of my family are from there so I have spent a lot of time exploring this beautiful part of our country - great walking tracks too!!

One piece of advice that you would give to a first time visitor to New Zealand?

Although New Zealand may look small on a map, it can take quite a bit of time to get from place to place. If you have limited time to travel around the country, choose a few of your must see locations and focus on those rather than trying to see everything so your trip isn't so rushed.

Rebecca

Where were you born?

Auckland

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to be out and about whether it is going for a walk, swimming in the ocean, reading a book in the sun, visiting a new café, restaurant or bar or travelling around our beautiful country.

Where is your “must visit” New Zealand destination?

My recommended must visit is the Coromandel Peninsula located about 3 hours south of Auckland. Known as being “good for your soul”, each town in the Coromandel offers something different whether it be beautiful scenic beaches, hiking and bike trails or local cafes and wineries.

One piece of advice that you would give to a first time visitor to New Zealand?

Bring an empty camera as you will be guaranteed to take a lot of photos, try our whitebait fritters and fish & chips!
